France has agreed to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.

French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.

"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.

Significantly, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.

This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
