Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
